How we’re supporting our local T Level students

Here at Hawes Construction Group, we are proud to be supporting the T Levels scheme, a fantastic programme that offers practical industry experience to young people as an alternative to A Levels and apprenticeships.

What are T Levels?

T Levels are a new post-GCSE qualification that is equivalent to three A levels. They offer students an alternative route to A levels, apprenticeships, and other courses for 16-19 year olds.

The program combines classroom learning with practical workplace experience, where students spend 80% of their time in an educational environment learning vocational skills that employers need, and 20% completing an industry placement.

As part of their T Levels, students spend a day per week with an employer (or 316 hours per year), while spending their remaining time at college.

Upon completion, T Levels can lead students into skilled employment, higher education, or apprenticeships, making them a versatile qualification for young people’s future careers.

They might even go on to do a degree apprenticeship, training with an employer while studying one day per week at university.

T Levels are great because they are practical, working qualifications, that give students a real hands-on insight into what they would be doing in the workplace.

How we’re helping out

Marley is a T Levels student who has joined us for the industry placement part of her qualification. She has been spending a day a week with us for a year, getting on-the-job insights into the world of construction and quantity surveying. She came to us because her uncle Chris is one of our trusted electrical subcontractors, and he recommended that Marley should do a T-Level in the built environment.

Marley has always wanted to work in construction, and has ambitions of becoming a quantity surveyor, following in her dad’s footsteps – she always enjoyed learning about what he was working on in the industry.

We are trying to give Marley the best experience possible, through site visits and practical experiences. We want to make sure it is an interesting and inspiring experience, showing Marley the best of the industry!

Hear from Marley

“Working at Hawes has been a really good experience and I am definitely enjoying it. I get lots of tasks to do, and I can go onsite and see projects as they progress. It’s great having the opportunity to learn from industry professionals. It’s also a really comfortable, relaxed environment, and everyone is very nice and friendly.”
