The UK Government’s recent announcement setting a 2029 deadline to remove all Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) from schools and colleges marks a pivotal step in addressing a critical issue within our built environment. With over 230 education settings already confirmed to contain RAAC, and many more across the wider public sector, the urgency to act has never been greater.
At Hawes Construction Group, we’re proud to be part of the solution.
Taking Action: Removing RAAC for a Safer Future
Over the past few years, we’ve been working closely with leading institutions, including the University of Sussex, to identify, assess, and safely remove RAAC from key public buildings. Our team has supported complex remediation projects that not only enhance structural safety but also ensure minimal disruption to students, staff, and the public.
One such project took place in Bramber House at the University of Sussex. Here, we helped to remove RAAC from high-traffic areas such as Staircase 2, implementing innovative construction techniques to maintain accessibility and safety throughout the process.

Beyond Construction: Protecting People and Preserving Heritage
Our work goes far beyond removing and replacing materials — it’s about protecting people, preserving heritage, and future-proofing our public infrastructure. The University of Sussex’s proactive approach to RAAC removal and commitment to sustainability set an inspiring example for other institutions nationwide.
As part of our ongoing mission, Hawes Construction Group continues to support organisations across East & West Sussex in navigating the complexities of RAAC remediation from strategic planning and safety assessments to full project delivery and stakeholder engagement.
Partnering for Progress
As we look ahead to 2029, one thing is clear: collaboration will be key. By bringing together expertise from the construction industry, education sector, and public authorities, we can ensure that our public buildings remain safe, sustainable, and resilient for generations to come.
If your organisation is facing RAAC-related challenges, we’re here to help.
