The Brief

The project brief was to expand the dining facilities at Clyde House Boarding House, part of Claremont School. The scheme involves the removal of the existing dining room and its replacement with a larger, single-storey extension, including an external staircase.

Clyde House sits within Claremont School, a co-educational boarding school in East Sussex owned by the International Schools Partnership.

The proposal introduces a contemporary addition to the existing building, designed to be well insulated, naturally ventilated, and low in maintenance. It will significantly enhance the dining experience while supporting the needs of a growing school community.

Our Solution

  • Once scaffolding had been installed we were able to install the new steel beams
  • We then commenced the new timber frame extension
  • Once the new frame was up we installed the new roof coverings and windows
  • Our teams were then able to break through into the existing building and install new joists
  • Work then commenced on insulation and flooring and once completed plastering could commence
  • M&E, carpentry and decorators could continue
  • Once the inside was completed we installed the new external metal staircase

The Result

The new dining room will provide facilities for seven staff members and seventy-four boarding students three times a day for breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as breakout areas during the normal school day/weekends. It is likely the school will limit the numbers of staff and pupils to two sittings per mealtime (breakfast, lunch and dinner).
